Correspondence with Helen

Hi Karl,

I'm very happy to hear from you!!! I got an email from Stacey last Sunday asking if I want to do a 2 week placement at Centennial (starting next Monday) and I said yes. I don't know which campus yet.
This is b/c it takes so long to arrange things in the evening program. People wait more than 6 months for a placement. Even though Stacey told me I was scheduled to go in November I am actually filling in for someone ahead of me on the list who cancelled. I always thought that I don't want to go on the placement in January, February or March b/c of the weather. Also, I want to get it over with and be one step closer to getting the diploma.
I spoke to Joey who did her placement there and she said it was great. She said the hours were 8 to 4 and 10 to 6. She also said if I were offered a job it would probably not start until the following September.
When I told my supervisor at the St. Claire library I was going on this placement she got upset and said I should have asked her before accepting. I disagree but I did not argue with her. On my placement I may have to ask for time off to go to the St. Claire library.
I really want to come to the dinner. When I find out a bit more about the schedule I will respond. I know I will be on the placement on the 30th but I don't know the hours yet. Hopefully that day I will finish early and be able to attend. It may be hard if I have to ask Centennial for time off to go to St. Claire and to go to a dinner. They may not like it.
One question: Do you have to be a member to attend this event? Or are you (as a member) able to bring a guest (me)??? How does it work?
Thanks,

Helen

Dear Helen,

I am still working on the OISE/UT cataloguing project. It extends to at least to November. It is good news for me. It is a full-time job, but I can only work four days every week from Mon. -- Thu. because I don't want to give up the opportunity at TPL. On Friday, Saturday and Sunday I work at TPL. It is crazy to work too hard? Maybe, I am a little tired.
There is possibility I will work at school board soon. But this plan has not been finalized and it is my last option. I also help my classmate Joanna to get a temporary position as video transcriptor at UT. I got the offer but I gave it up because I didn't have the time to do it. It is very important to share information among us, isn’t it?
You can try to send your resume outside Toronto. Are there any particular targets (libraries) you are looking for?
For Stacey, our placement co-ordinator, I would like to give my advice. Why don't you take the initiative to contact her, send email or talk to her, tell her about your concern and suggestion. She is very considerate and co-operative in general. You should talk to her directly because she has so many students to deal with.

Karl

Hi Karl,

How are you? What jobs are you currently working in? I still have not gone on the field placement (which is for a school or academic library). I am scheduled for November (as part of the evening program). I thought I might be going with the day students b/c people often end up cancelling their placements. So I am still waiting. One thing I don't like about Stacey is that she is very secretive. She won't tell you where you are going until the last minute. I honestly don't see the point of this. I hope soon to begin sending my resume to public library systems outside of Toronto. Have you tried this?
Thank you for the invitation. I would love to come, esp. being so close to Eglinton. Thank you for inviting me.
Take care,

Helen

Dear Helen,

How are you?
You must have been very busy for your field placement. This is a position probably you are interested in. It will start from Nov. 28. So I forward it to you.
There is an annual event on Dec. 26 (I guess) for the association. I invite you to come. We will gather in the Mandarin restaurant at Yonge/Eglinton in the evening.

Karl

Attached is a 7 month position with the Marion Powell Women's Health Information Centre.
